Happy Little Things

I think it’s important to find the little things in everyday life that make you happy.

Paula Cole

Today, my Target order arrived. In it were things that made me very happy – little things. Since I am two weeks past my last haircut appointment, my hair is getting a little unruly. I am not worry about it getting long (can’t get an appointment until at least May) but the in-between stage is challenging when you have a slight wave and cowlicks. Getting hairclips and headbands in my package today was so exciting!

On top of that, also in the box were new marker pens. I couldn’t wait to get them out of the package and start using them, but I forced myself to wait until my schoolwork was completed!

One thing I have learned over this past month is that nothing is certain or guaranteed. Life as we know it can change on a dime, and it has, and when things you have taken for granted are taken from you, you need to find joy in the little things. This is what we should have been doing all along. I hope we all learn that lesson and continue to find joy in life’s little moments and treasures.

On this the last day of the Slice of Life Writing Challenge, I am feeling sad that it is over. This community of writers and the challenge has given me a purpose for writing each day. During these unsettling times writing each day is something that has made me happy. I am committed to keep writing although I’m not sure if I continue the every day posts, but I will do my best.

Stay well.

  1. My much-needed hair appointment is April 8. I won’t be able to make it and neither will my stylist. I texted her and told her I can pay ahead if she needs me to. Her entire livelihood has been put on hold. My next text to her will be to ask which is the best hair color to get from Target. I’ve been staring at myself on video chats for three weeks and know that gray hair is going to make me look even older! I’m hoping I get to see my students again soon and I don’t want to look old and tired! I want to look fresh and excited when I see them again! I’m going to have to play with some hair clips and headbands to see if they can help. You are right…it’s the little things. Loved reading your blog this month. See you next year.

  2. I love what you had to say. This is my favorite part: “Life as we know it can change on a dime, and it has, and when things you have taken for granted are taken from you, you need to find joy in the little things. This is what we should have been doing all along. I hope we all learn that lesson and continue to find joy in life’s little moments and treasures.” So, so, so true. I’m sad that the challenge is over, too, but I’m very grateful that this community was here for us when we most needed it. Thanks! 🙂 ~JudyK

  3. Dear Rita,
I have enjoyed your daily postings. Topics you were able to clearly describe were in my thoughts. I’m just not a writer.
About our hair. It’s growing. About our nails. They need a manicure. All little inconveniences. We will all look different when this is over. We have now a lot of time to internalize our purpose.
Looking forward to seeing more posts as we move through the next 30 days. Stay safe ❤️

  4. I don’t know that writing has always made me happy, but it has made me connected this month, and I am going to miss it so, so much. Good luck with your hair. I understand the waves and cowlicks. And we’ll all stay connected on Tuesdays.

  5. Rita,
I’m glad I got to connect with you this month! Thanks for visiting my blog. I could not agree more with your statement about “this is what we should have been doing all along.” This month (during the pandemic) I noticed what was really important – and so many of those things are things we take for granted. As sad as it all seems, maybe we all needed this “wake up call.” I also hope we remember the lessons when it is over! I hope to “see” you again! Take Care, ~ Carol~

  6. Thanks Rita for the reminder. I wish I have visited your posts more often during this challenge. I think I have cried reading the posts of each other more than ever, and I am also sad that the challenge is ending. I think what I am going to do next is visit the posts I missed and maybe keep posting three comments a day no matter for what day. This challenge during this time had taught me how much we need to connect emotionally. Keep writing, we need your slices!.
