Something is Better Than Nothing, I Guess?!?

Today is by far the hardest day of this challenge. Every idea that pops into my head is immediately shot down and tossed out like last week’s leftovers. I don’t know why today is so particularly difficult, but I cannot quiet my mind enough to write. I thought about waiting until later, but I have a list of things that I want to accomplish this evening before I sit down to lose myself in, “This Is Us” at 9:00 PM.

I can’t quite put my finger on the problem. I am feeling tired and restless, weary and on edge. I scrolled through some other posts – nothing. I looked up quotes of the day – nothing. I paged through my writer’s notebook – nothing. What do you do to break through writer’s block?

  1. I think we all reach this point at some point during the challenge. When I’m stuck I usually write about writing nothing. I figure writing about nothing is still writing about something.

  2. This was me a couple of days ago. I hope I am over it and can continue strong! Maybe try looking through some of your notebook pages? I hope it doesn’t last long for you!

  3. Just relax, Rita. That’s my advice. You have a great way with words and even a slice like this displays your natural talent. I love the comparison to last week’s left overs. I think your brain is just tired and tomorrow, you’ll have topics popping around like fireworks. By the way, I’ll also be immersing myself in “This is Us” tonight. Can you believe this will soon disappear?

  4. I have times that the creative juices don’t flow – it more often applies to my jewelry making than my writing. Is that “jeweler’s block?” Anyway, I usually get up from my crafting area and leave it for at least a half-hour but sometimes days at a time. (Obviously, leaving it alone for days when you are in the challenge doesn’t work for you right now). You are 3/4 through this challenge, Rita! You can do it! How about what spring flowers you look forward to seeing and where they grow (your yard, a park, etc.) Or, how about a food post? Do you drink coffee or tea or no caffeine at all and why? Have you done any spring cleaning? Do you have trip plans you are making? I hope there are some suggestions here that can help. You CAN do it!

  5. I like this sentence: Every idea that pops into my head is immediately shot down and tossed out like last week’s leftovers. This in itself could have been a slice. 🙂

  6. Thank you for sharing. I am struggling with this as well. I have a lot of drafts I am pulling from for my blog, but my journal is struggling lately as I seem to just sit and stare at the page despite the fact that my mind is bustling with so many things. I’m taking that as a cue that I need to read – especially poetry – to help jump start the writing muscle again. 🙂

  7. I’m having the same problem. I think it’s a combination of this being my first year as a retired teacher and the pandemic affecting the number of interesting things I do now. I think I’ll have to delve into memories and write about the past.

  8. Well, you nailed the simile comparing shooting ideas down like tossing out last week’s leftovers. It’s such a true comparison! These are two formats I kept in my back pocket for days when writer’s block rears it’s ugly head. They’re an easy application to any day, even the ones when nothing eye-catching has happened! Best of luck down the road!

  10. It seems that there is always one day like this for me as well. I have plenty of ideas–but for whatever reason, on a blocked day it’s like my energy to write any of those ideas is blocked. Luckily, I think I’ve found every year of slicing that in another day or two, I find my energy and joy in slicing again. In the meantime, at least we can write about writer’s block!
