Here it is again, March 1st, the beginning of another Slice of Life Challenge. I wasn’t sure I was going to participate this year because frankly, I am not sure I had it in me. I know the pandemic has taken its toll on so many people in so many different ways, but I can’t even begin to explain to those not in the world of education just how difficult these past years have been – one harder than the next.
So many of the teachers I have met through this challenge have been struggling with the same decision and sharing their thoughts on social media. Reading their posts made me realize what I cherish the most about this challenge – the collegiality, the connection, the creativity. I have come to meet writers from around the country and around the world, and reading their stories fuels my creativity, my teaching, and my soul.
So today, I begin once more for the seventh year in a row. I look forward to reading the posts of the other “slicers” as well as the comments readers have about my posts. This may be harder than in previous years, but if it were easy, it wouldn’t be called a CHALLENGE!
I am participating in the Slice of Life Challenge sponsored by twowritingteachers.org
Thanks for sharing this with us. We got this! I am looking forward to read your share of slicing.<3

Welcome back, Friend. I contemplated myself for the exact same reasons. In the end I decided to do it. I miss being connected to this.

Oh, Rita, I’m so glad you’re back. I knew you would be! This is my seventh year, as well, and you so beautifully expressed the gems that come from this writing challenge…”collegiality, connection and creativity”. What more can one ask?

Yes! Here we are! I was also not sure that I was going to participate in SOL this year. It has been a difficult school year in so many ways….but here we are! I am glad to see that you were joining the challenge again this year. However, I cherish many of the same things that you do about this challenge.

Here with you in the same spirit. Social media is a drain, but slice of life is life giving in the ways you mentioned! Yes the collegiality!
Aziz Ansari says in a recent Netflix Special (paraphrase) : the way the system is set up in social media now, we know what everyone is going to say before they say it.
Here at Slice of Life…I don’t know. I don’t know what stories you have to tell.

Indeed, writing every day is a challenge, and while I’m no longer teaching every day, I need the stories of those who are to stay connected, to stay empathetic, to remind me of all my career meant, so I need you here, too, and thank you for being in this space.

Yes, I was filled with so many of the same thoughts. How could I possibly slice this year when I’m so exhausted? But I would have missed this special time with friends, and so here we are! Glad to be on the journey with you for another year.
